Charlotte Mildred (Nelson) Carter
March 17, 1929 – December 2, 2017
Charlotte spent 88 years and 8 months on earth, taking her last breath on Saturday morning at MaineGeneral Medical Center after a brief and sudden illness.
Charlotte graduated from Gardiner High School in 1947 and married Kenneth Carter in 1960. During the 70’s, 80’s and into the 90’s Charlotte worked as a school lunch lady in the Gardiner area where she served good hot meals to hundreds of school children, mostly at the Randolph Elementary School. She lived most of her life on the Nelson Road in Pittston where she raised her family and as one of the “neighborhood moms” welcomed countless kids into her home night and day. Charlotte lived a very humble life, enjoying her pets, gardening with her husband of 33 years, feeding the birds (except those damn turkeys), and watching the Red Sox (she especially loved Pedro Martinez, pronounced PEE-dro).
Charlotte was predeceased by her husband Ken, her parents Eva and Marnus, brothers Ray and Alfred, sisters Thelma and Avis. She is survived by her two children Karen and Mike, close dear friend and niece Natalie, several cousins, nieces and nephews, two grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Born during the depression, Mom was thrifty everyday of her life, pinching pennies relentlessly in any way possible, recycling before recycling was cool. In trying to abide by what we know would be her wishes, her service will be simple and we ask that in lieu of flowers a donation be made to the Bread of Life Soup Kitchen in Augusta where we know they too pinch pennies to serve hot meals to those in need.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday December 6th from 10 to 11am at Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave Gardiner followed by a service at 11am. Burial will follow in the North Pittston Cemetery beside her husband.
