Gardiner - Eleanor Josephine Thornton, 96, of Gardiner and recently resided at the Hillside Terrace in Hallowell died Thursday, March 8, 2018. She was born May 21, 1921 in Sanford, the daughter of Oscar J Swanson and Ethel (Watson) Swanson.
She was a graduate of Brewer High School and received a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Maine in Orono in 1943. She then attended the School of Medical Laboratory Technique at Rochester General Hospital.
Eleanor served as Chief Cytotechnologist at the Kennebec Valley Medical Center in Augusta retiring in 1991.
Among other wide ranging interests, she enjoyed skiing, sailing, training and showing her golden retrievers, gardening, and in her later years a good workout at the Gardiner Curves followed by a visit to the Dunkin Donuts.
She was predeceased by her husband of fifty years, Seth W. Thornton and her son David M. Thornton.
She is survived by her son, James A Thornton of Jay and his wife Dawn, two grandsons, Jason S. Thornton and wife Maggie of Poland and Mathew S. Thornton and wife Ali of North Conway, NH and great grandchildren, Althea, Eleanor and Marlee.
At the family’s request, there will be no visiting hours. There will be a private graveside service at the family lot in Grove Cemetery in Belfast in the spring.
Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral home 53 Brunswick Ave Gardiner.
