Welcome to the memorial page for

Lois Florence (Potter) Wallace

March 13, 1938 ~ July 4, 2017 (age 79)

Gardiner - Lois Florence Potter Wallace (Flo) died on July 4, 2017, after several years of declining health due to advanced dementia.

She was born in Gardiner, Maine, on March 13, 1938, to Zilpha (Butterfield) and Clyde Potter, the youngest of four children. After graduating from Gardiner High School at 16, she went on to Connecticut College for Women, earning a BA in Music and Composition in 1958. Florence also attended the Bangor Conservatory to receive her teaching certificate.

In June 1959 she married Gordon Wallace. Their daughter Becky was born in January, 1961 and son Scott in July, 1963.

Mrs. Wallace began her teaching career in Augusta in 1962 and transferred to the Gardiner school system in 1971. For many years she taught music in elementary schools; each day of the week she taught at a different school. She later went on to the Middle School where she was well known for the concerts she produced each year. There are many people in the Gardiner area with fond memories of “Mrs. Wallace, The Music Teacher”.  She was also known for performing in the community with her autoharp.

Those who knew Florence understood that Christ Church Episcopal and its music were central to her life. Her mother, Zilpha Potter, was the long-term musical director, organist and choir master at Christ Church. She joined her mother as the Junior Choir Director in the early 1960's. After her mother retired, Mrs. Wallace went on to become music director, choir master and director of the bell choir, often writing her own arrangements. She continued until ill health forced her retirement.

She was pre-deceased by her husband Gordon Wallace, parents Zilpha and Clyde Potter and her brother Roderick Potter.

She is survived by her daughter Becky Jacobson, son-in-law Rick and grandson Josh; son Scott, his fiancee Leaf and grandchildren Jack, Charlotte and Carter; her brother and sister-in-law Frederick and Lisa Potter; sister and brother-in-law Priscilla and Jack Hirschenhofer; and sister-in-law Barbara Potter. She is also survived by nieces and nephews Susan Potter, Thomas Potter, Christopher Potter, Nitsa Potter, Greg Hilbert, Jeff Hilbert and their spouses as well as several grandnieces and nephews.

The triad of Flo's life was her family, her music and her teaching. She will be missed by many.
