Robert A McLaughlin, JrApril 11, 1955 ~ July 29, 2017 (age 62)
West Gardiner- Robert A. McLaughlin Jr. passed away unexpectedly at home July 29th, 2017. Born in Gardiner, Maine on April 11, 1955 to Robert and Carolyn McLaughlin, he was the oldest of nine children.
A graduate of Gardiner High School, he was a state cross country and track champion who held several records. His athletic skills earned him the nickname, “The Running Tiger”. After high school, Robert joined the Army and served his country until he was discharged in October 1976. Following his service, he worked at the VA Togus for 38 years. Everyone who knew him called him Bob and couldn’t help but love his jovial smile. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially his best friend of over 38 years, his wife Mona. They would have celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in September. He loved sports, outdoor activities and he really loved to ride his motorcycle.
Bob is predeceased by his parents, Robert A. McLaughlin Sr. and Carolyn Bailey McIver.
Bob is survived by his wife Mona, his daughter, Tina Dupont and her husband Rick of West Gardiner; step children, Kelly Hopper and husband William of Florida and Matthew Heath of New York; his sister, Kathy Beckwith and husband Tom of Monmouth; brothers, Jeff McLaughlin of Georgia, Joseph McLaughlin of Chelsea, Kenneth McLaughlin and partner Dianne of Kingman, Gary McLaughlin of Randolph, Brian McLaughlin of Pittston, Adam Carlton and wife Aimee of Richmond and Darren Carlton of Randolph; grandchildren, Alysha Wolkens and husband Jacob of Augusta, David Lord of Augusta, Thomas Hopper and William Hopper of Florida. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews and an extended family that will dearly miss him.
Memorial visitation will be held Friday August 4th from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Staples Funeral Home in Gardiner. A memorial service with military honors will take place Saturday August 5th at 1pm at Staples Funeral Home. A gathering for family and friends will follow at the West Gardiner Rod and Gun Club.
