WEST GARDINER - Robert (Bob) E. White, 81, of West Gardiner, passed away peacefully at the Central Maine Medical Center on the morning of May 6, 2017, following a brief illness. He was born on Nov. 12, 1935, in Danforth, the only son of Lewis and Audrey (Robinson) White, and grew up in South Gardiner. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, including several months in Japan, and received an honorable discharge in 1957. Following his military service he worked at the VA Hospital at Togus for 35 years until his retirement in 1992.
Bob was an active member of the local community. He was a member of the Bethlehem Masonic Lodge in Augusta for about 50 years. He was a member of the West Gardiner Volunteer Fire Department for 40 years and served in several leadership roles including acting fire chief. During his time as a volunteer firefighter he was called out to countless house fires, brush fires, and car accidents. He was a longtime member of the Gardiner Sportsmen's Club and American Legion Post 132 in Richmond. In recent years, he delivered groceries for Chrysalis Place and organized seniors' dinners in West Gardiner.
Bob loved the outdoors, fishing, playing cards, watching sports, home projects, spending time with his family and friends, and taking his grandchildren for boat rides on the Cobbossee. Although allergic to animals, he was deeply fond of cats, especially "Morris," "Zipper," "Blackie," and "Boots."
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria A. (Godbout) White; and son James L. White, of West Gardiner; his son Jeffrey C. White and wife Fiona Swan-White, of Dunkirk, Md.; his son Michael J. White and wife Amanda Ross-White and their children Alexander, 5, and Rebecca, 7, of Kingston, Ontario; several cousins and extended family members; and numerous friends.
Bob always was willing to help people, and he never turned down anyone in need.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Central Maine Medical Center and Marshwood Center in Lewiston, and Androscoggin Home Care, for their kindness and compassionate care of Bob during the last few months.
A graveside service will be held at a later date.
