Theodore "Ted" R. Sparrow, JrApril 11, 2017 ~ April 11, 2017
Theodore "Ted" Roosevelt Sparrow, Jr., 84, of Pittston, Maine passed away Tuesday, April
11, 2017, peacefully at his home.
Ted was born June 7, 1932 in Pittston, ME. He graduated from Gardiner High School in
1950. Ted studied farm management and agriculture at the University of Maine and
received a scholarship to finish his degree in Hawaii studying tropical agriculture. Ted's
love of agriculture kept him in Hawaii for 23 years working at Kohala Sugar plantation
and running Kamakani Growers the last three years. Ted's next assignment would be in Iran where he spent four years working for Hawaiian Agronomics International as project director and senior advisor training Iranian nationals. His journey would come full circle with his return back to Maine in 1979. Ted then worked for USDA, Farmers Home Administration from which he retired in 1994 to begin his final "retirement" phase as an organic farmer along with his wife, Karen. Together they ran Sparrow Farms. Throughout his life Ted dabbled in many things. He was a farmer, a builder, jack of all trades: an individual who was actively involved in the communities where he lived, including being a Pittston selectman, and loved by those who knew him. He was always willing to lend a hand to people in need. From farmer's markets (founded the Bath market) to local government affairs and projects, Ted had a positive impact on those lives and areas that he touched. He will be truly missed.
Ted is survived by his wife of 30 years, Karen Rose (Hermenze) Sparrow; his sister,
Priscilla Gunter; his four children from his first marriage to Genevieve Lorraine (Brown)
Sparrow: Lani Ann (Louis) Goodrum of Plano, TX, Ronald Lewis (Anne) Sparrow Sr. of
Brentwood, TN, Thomas Allen (Kelly) Sparrow, of Randolph, ME, and Jani Marie
(Larry) Fisk of Tucson, AZ; his 10 grandchildren, Rachael Amaral, Eric Goodrum, Alexander
Goodrum, Lewis Goodrum, Anne-Marie Myers, Ronald Sparrow, Jr., Robert Sparrow,
Roxanne Sparrow, Alex Sparrow, and Danielle Fisk; 12 great-grandchildren; and many
friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marion Lillian (Marley) Sparrow and Theodore Roosevelt Sparrow, Sr.
Services will be held at Staples Funeral Home, Gardiner, ME on Friday, April 14, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Donations can be made to the Gardiner Food Bank or Maine General Hospice on Ted's behalf.
