Verna P. Dickerson, Born 12/29/1931, Died 12/27/2017

Verna was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a daughter to Dewey P. and Cordie L. Osborne (Greene). She was preceded in death by her sisters Lois Osborne and Doris Minton, and her brothers James Osborne, Ronnie Osborne and Dewey Osborne.

She is survived by her brothers John Osborne and Timothy Osborne, her four children, Susan Reed and her husband Bobby of Jonesboro, Tennessee, Sheila Couch and her husband Dennis of Johnson City, Tennessee, D. Michael McGaha of Gaithersburg, Maryland , Kathleen Cutler and her husband Troy of Pittston, Maine, her grandchildren Sandra Quiggle, Matthew Reed, Mark Reed, Ashley McGaha, Jonas McGaha, Kaitlyn Garloff , Madison Cutler, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Verna was a graduate of East Tennessee State University where she earned her nursing degree. She spent the majority of her nursing career working in nursing homes. After she retired, Verna went to work in the nursery at Skyline Heights Baptist Church where she was a member. She also volunteered tirelessly at King’s Benevolent, filling boxes with donated medical supplies and expired medications to be sent to third world countries. At the age of 72 she hopped on a bus and went to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to help in the relief efforts for hurricane Katrina. She slept on a cot in a church basement while helping rebuild the area.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Alzheimer’s Center in Gardiner, Glen Ridge Nursing Home in Augusta and Maine General Hospice for the dignity and care afforded to our mother.

A memorial service and celebration of her life will be held in Tennessee at a future date  and the family requests that in lieu of flowers,  donations be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
