Anna J. Chase
Anna Jean Bennett Chase, 91, of Hallowell, passed away Tuesday evening, March 6th with her daughters and granddaughter at her side.
Anna was born in Randolph on February 12, 1927, the daughter of Melvin and Bertha Whitaker Bennett. She was educated at the Randolph Grammar School and Gardiner Area High School, class of 1945. Over her life, Anna was employed in local stores including the Gardiner Youth Center, a women’s and children’s clothing establishment, the State of Maine, Department of Finance Services, and the Wiscasset Middle School.
On March 29, 1947, Anna married Ralph A. Chase, Jr. at the Christ Church in Gardiner, following his service in Europe during World War II. They were married 52 years until his death in 1999.
As a child, Anna was raised in Randolph and spent many wonderful days visiting her mother’s family farm in Liberty. She loved poetry, music, reading, politics and foremost, spending time with her family. With Ralph, Anna enjoyed many day trips and traveling. Following Ralph’s passing, Anna continued to travel across the country and at 82 enjoyed a special trip to Europe, touring the cities and regions her late husband had experienced as a young man in the service. Her true legacy is that of a loving, giving and supportive daughter, mother, and grandmother.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, her parents, and her sister, Marilyn Jamison. She is survived by her sons, Ronald and his wife Nancy of Topsham, Donald and his partner Raffael of Palm Springs, CA., Robert and his partner Ivan of St. Petersburg, FL; her daughters, Diane and her husband Bruce Bourque of Freeport, and Jayne of Hallowell; grandsons, Eric and his wife Hannah Seidel Chase, and Adam Chase; a granddaughter Molly Hathaway Hanley and her husband Nathaniel; great granddaughters, Raina and Freya Chase; and a special friend, Joan Sawyer.
Visiting hours will be from 11-1 p.m. on Monday, March 12th at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner with a celebration of life service at 1:00 p.m. Burial will take place in the spring at Oak Grove Cemetery in Gardiner.
