Eleanor Alice (Johnson) Nisbet

February 27, 1927 ~ March 5, 2018 (age 91)

Eleanor Alice (Johnson) Nisbet, 91, of Gardiner, passed peacefully at her daughter Heather and son-in-law Jim's home in Windsor, ME on Monday, March 5, 2018.

Eleanor was born on February 27, 1927 in Bowdoin, ME, to Robert Horace Johnson and Hazel Joy (Arno) Johnson.

She graduated from Gardiner High School in 1944.  She studied opera for two years at the Boston Conservatory of Music and came home for the holidays to sing solos at church.

Eleanor married Alfred L. Nisbet on July 3rd, 1949 at Highland Avenue United Methodist Church (HAUMC), Gardiner, ME and they shared 68 wonderful years together.

A long time member of HAUMC, Eleanor was the Music Director and lead soloist starting in 1958 until her retirement in 2013. She also served as a church trustee, United Methodist Woman president and on other committees.  Eleanor filled in as a music teacher at Gardiner area schools.  She taught private piano and voice lessons to many Gardiner area students in her home.

Eleanor was recognized by the Gardiner Spirit of America Foundation in 2004 as an unsung hero for her volunteer work as a singer and accompanist in the area.

She enjoyed working alongside her husband in their beautiful gardens and took great enjoyment in bird watching.

Eleanor was predeceased by her parents and brothers Robert Johnson and George Johnson.

She will be sadly missed by her husband Alfred; brothers Richard Johnson (Alice) of Wallingford, CT and Arthur Johnson (Cynthia) of Belgrade, ME; brother-in-law Everett Conrad "Connie" Nisbet (Louise) of South Portland, ME; son Alexander "Sandy" Nisbet (Karyn Lebel) of Minot, ME; daughter Katherine Rowe (Mark) of Jefferson, ME; daughter Heather Brown (James) of Windsor, ME and son Randall Nisbet (Amy) of Randolph, ME.  Grandchildren Nicholas Nisbet (Patricia) of Denver, CO; Benjamin Brown (Tanya) of Ozark, MO; Matthew Brown (Erin) of Winthrop, ME; James Beckwith of West Gardiner, ME; Grant Nisbet of Randolph, ME and Amelia Nisbet of Augusta, ME. Great-grandchildren Ryder Nisbet of Denver, CO; Gavin Brown and Harper Brown of Winthrop, ME and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Many thanks to the staff of Maine General Hospice for the care provided to Mom and the kindness and support shown to the family.

A memorial service will be held at Highland Avenue United Methodist Church, Gardiner, ME on Saturday, March 17th at 11:00am.  Reception will follow in the church vestry.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Highland Avenue United Methodist Church.

A committal service will be held in the Spring.
