June 10, 1936 ~ June 12, 2018 (age 82)

Richard Alan Slocum (Dick)

Richard Alan Slocum, 82, of Chelsea, Maine passed away on June 12, 2018 at home surrounded by his family.

Richard was born on June 10, 1936 in Rochester, New York to Mary Ethel (Behan) Slocum and Harold Slocum. He fondly recalled summer trips to Canandaigua Lake, playing cards with his father and uncle, singing in the church choir with his brother, and his high school and college basketball achievements. Dick married Christine M. McGlauflin, the love of his life, in 1961 while teaching at Ricker Classical Institute and College in Houlton, Maine.

Dick graduated from University of Rochester and earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Tulane University with a published thesis.  Dick taught at Xavier University, Louisiana State University, and Tulane University in New Orleans.  Dick was a professor at University of Tennessee at Martin, University of Maine at Augusta and Thomas College in Waterville.  Dick was especially proud of his modular math units. Dick was employed by Central Maine Power Company as a computer analyst and by Epro as CADD system coordinator.

Richard and Christine were fortunate to have many happy years together.  They traveled extensively and loved landscaping around their home.

Dick enjoyed music especially jazz.  Sports were important his entire life. He played basketball and tennis into his later years.  Dick followed his beloved Celtics, Patriots and Red Sox through their ups and downs for many years.  He loved to read with a penchant for Mysteries and detective novels. He enjoyed word games and crossword puzzles. Dick was gifted with a wry sense of humor and loved to make wisecracks and tell jokes.  He enjoyed laughing with family and friends. In his serious moments, Richard was proud of his family, especially his grandchildren, and often recalled stories from their youth.

Richard Slocum is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Christine Slocum, of Chelsea, Maine; his daughters: Alison Valley, and her husband, Alan, of Gardiner, Melanie Slocum of Rockland, and Jennifer Bergeron, and her partner, Jonathan Rosenbloom, of Winslow; his grandson, Phillip Bergeron, and his wife, Jeanne of Navarre, Florida and his granddaughter Rachael Bergeron of Winslow, his brother, Donald Slocum of Bowling Green, Kentucky and nephews Matthew Slocum and his wife Denada of Pearland, Texas and Warren Slocum of Chicago, Illinois.

The family would like to express sincere appreciation for the level of service given by the Hospice and home health care workers who tended to Dick during his final days.
