Arthur Cleba Chadbourne, beloved husband of Geraldine Joy McKay Chadbourne and father of seven sons, grandfather of sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren died Monday, Feb. 11 five days before his 85th birthday in the Maine General Medical Center, Augusta surrounded by his family following a short illness.Arthur was born February 17, 1928 in Skowhegan Maine the son of Merle G. Chadbourne and Berle Ella Whittemore Chadbourne.He attended school in Harmony, Maine and served in the United State Navy from 1946-1948 aboard the Tapahanic #A043 traveling to many world ports and was the recipient of World War II victory medal. Prior to entering the Navy he was employed by the E.E. Smith company on Cony Hill, Augusta and following his discharge from the Navy he was employed by the Coca Cola Company in Augusta and Bangor for eight years, then the Humpty Dumpty Potato Chip Company, South Portland as a District Supervisor. He retired in 1994 as Vice President of sales for the company after 33 years employment.Arthur and Geraldine Joy McKay were married 65 years ago on August 7, 1948 by the Reverend Alfred Mulkern, of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gardiner.Arthur was a convert to Catholicism and served St. Joseph Church as a volunteer Sacristan, a member of the church decorating committee and was chairman of the ministers of Eucharist.Throughout his retirement years Arthur also worked from May through October at the Sunset Vista Cottages, Edgecomb.Mr. Chadbourne was predeceased by his parents Merle and Berle Chadbourne, Harmony, Maine; brothers and spouses: Clarence and Julia Libby Oakland, Raymond and Bessie Libby, Pittsfield, Willard and Una Chadbourne, Harmony, Warren and Christine Chadbourne, Unity, Ivan Chadbourne , Ripley and sisters and spouses; Madeline and George Corey, Sidney, Mildred and Charles Deering, St. Albans, Arrieta and Howard Annis, Harmony.Arthur is survived by his wife Geraldine Joy McKay Chadbourne and his seven sons and spouses: Philip and Shirley Chadbourne, Chelsea, Leonard Chadbourne, Attleboro, MA, Arthur Jr. and Cindy Chadbourne, Pittston, Anthony and Liziel Chadbourne, Gilbert, AZ, Douglas and significant other Lisa Marshall, Richmond, John Chadbourne, Gardiner, and Jeffrey and Sarah Chadbourne, West Gardiner, sisters Irene and Clarence McKay Sr, Gardiner, and Florence Sinclair, Harmony, brothers and spouses: Robert and Roberta Chadbourne, Harmony, Archie and Jackie Chadbourne, Garland, and sister in law Joan Chadbourne of Ripley, and many nephews, nieces and cousins in addition to 16 grand and 9 great grand children.Arthur's family is ever so grateful for Dr. John vanSummern and the caregivers who assisted in Home Care and doctors, nurses, attendants, and all other care givers at Maine Medical Center Augusta.Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7pm at Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave Gardiner on Thursday, Feb 14. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church Gardiner on Friday 10am. Burial will take place in the spring in St. Joseph Cemetery, Gardiner. A reception will take place in the American Legion Hall, Gardiner following the funeral Mass.
