VASALBORO - Broadus Mitchell Henson, Jr., AKA "Buddy", of Vassalboro, ME, passed away peacefully at his home due to a sudden decline in his health on January 25, 2024. Broadus was just 39 years old at the time, and his family is devastated by this loss.
Broadus was born in Charlottesville, VA on December 10, 1984, to Broadus Henson, Sr. and the late Sylvia Vaughan Henson; he was his parent's first-born child. He graduated from Charlottesville High School in June 2003, and shortly after, he began his work at the University of Virginia Medical Center. After 6 years, in December 2009, he left UVA Medical Center to attend college at PVCC, pursuing a degree in Broadcasting. After some time, he rejoined the workforce with positions at both Lowes of Charlottesville and Hershey Chocolate of Virginia in Stuarts Draft.
Broadus had an exceptionally large space in his heart for his sister, Olivia. Whenever they would talk, she could always make him laugh, even when they both had so much going on in their own lives. He also loved and respected the mother of his children (and her support system) for how she loved and raised their daughter and son, especially in his absence when he moved out of state. Above everything, he loved his two children most of all, and was so very proud of the both of them. He was so very passionate about his family; and not just his children and siblings, but his whole family in Virginia --- he missed them all so very much and spoke of them all the time.
Broadus had an unbelievably large heart – he was a loving and intelligent man that made everyone he met feel special. In fact, no matter where he worked or what he did, everyone loved him, and he will always be remembered for his kindness and sense of humor. He was passionate about many things, but specifically – his two children and his siblings, tattoos, movies and music. He always had dreams of being a DJ on the radio station, which comes from his love of music, and anyone who knew him knew how much he loved music! With love of music comes the love of different backgrounds and genres of music, and having said that, his favorite artists (to name a few) were Jay-Z, Lil' Kim and Teena Marie; he was lucky enough to see Jay-Z in concert in October 2008 when he performed in Charlottesville, VA.
Broadus spent the last nearly 9 years in Augusta and Vassalboro, Maine, with his long-time best friend and devoted partner, Denise O'Neill. During his time in Maine, he received his certification as an Adult Behavioral Specialist/CRMA. He was last employed at Motivational Services, Inc. in Augusta, ME, where he could help and support adults with mental disabilities. He was always a fan of basketball, not only to watch the Lakers, but also to play in his free time. Upon moving to Maine in December 2015, he fell in love with football, and was a die-hard fan of the New England Patriots.
Broadus was preceded in death by his mother, Sylvia Vaughan Henson; his maternal grandparents, George and Hazel Vaughan; his paternal grandparents, Broadus and Barbara Henson; his aunt Maggie Loving; his aunt Irene Vaughan Carter; his uncle William "Bug" Vaughan; his cousin James "Jimmy" Vaughan; his uncle Howard "Glenn" Carey; his former mother-in-law Brenda Orsolini, whom he loved dearly; and his long-time friend, Jermaine "Manky" Jackson, who was like a brother to him.
Broadus is survived by many people - as mentioned, he was the oldest of his siblings and had two children, so the family left to remember him is quite large. He is survived by his only two children, Ciara and Christian Henson of Palmyra, VA; his father, Broadus Henson Sr. of Paintbank, VA; his only brother, Michael Henson of Charlottesville, VA; his sister, Olivia (Jamal) Bowles with nephews Octavion and Xzayvion Booker, Michael Bowles Jr. of Palmyra, VA, nieces Malayah Bowles of Palmyra, VA and Jamira Bowles of Madison, VA; his sister Alysha Carter with nephew Jeremiah Denny and niece Ariyah Carter of Fredrick, MD; his aunts Lillie Carter and Kathy (Mitchell) Carter of Roseland, VA; his aunts Linda Carey and Clara (Alexander) Eubanks of Charlottesville, VA; Allison Carter of Gaithersburg, MD, who was like a second mother to him; devoted cousins, to name a few: Charles "Chip" (Shameka) Carter of Arrington, VA, Demetrius "Petey" (Kenyotta) Vaughan of Roseland, VA, and Deronda Eubanks of Charlottesville, VA; the mother of his two children, Jessica Orsolini of Palmyra, VA; and a host of additional cousins, family, friends, and close acquaintances.
Please know that when Broadus spoke of his final time in Maine, his wish was for Denise to bring his remains back home to Virginia, to his children, where he always knew he belonged in the beginning. He wanted everyone to celebrate his life and to comfort his children and loved ones.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at 4:00PM at the English Inn, located at 2000 Morton Drive, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Visitation with the family will be held one hour prior to the service, starting at 3:00PM. We welcome all attendees to wear blue and/or black to remember Broadus by, as these were his favorite colors. The family also requests that those who attend the memorial service contribute by sharing their own memories/reflections of him at the service.
Broadus' departure comes as a great shock, a deep wound, and is gravely felt by his entire family and countless others who knew and loved him. The family deeply appreciates your support during this difficult time and asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the GoFundMe which was created in the names of his children to use in their future.
