Obituary

OAKLAND - Cheryl Lucia Hunter, 59, of Oakland, died on Monday, January 12, 2026, at her home. The youngest daughter of Matthew and Elsie Hunter was born November 2, 1966, in Augusta, Maine. Ever happy and joyful, Cheryl made the most of her life with the challenges she faced. Cheryl was educated at the Cerebral Palsy School at South Parish Congregational Church in Augusta. She then attended a program run by the Hallowell Public Schools at Maria Clark School in Hallowell. For many summers, Cheryl was an active camper at Kennebec Valley Day Camp located at the Hallowell Rod and Gun Club. Cheryl's family was vested in making sure she lived her life to the fullest potential. She participated in the Maine Special Olympics, therapeutic horseback riding, and swimming. Cheryl loved music and being the center of attention. She is predeceased by her father, Matthew. Cheryl is survived by her mother, Elsie, of Hallowell; two sisters, Diane Citron and husband Carl of Medway, Massachusetts, and Janice Hunter, of Worcester, Massachusetts; nephew, Jacob Citron and wife Brittany of Medway, Massachusetts, and niece, Kasey Citron and husband Jonathan Kopacz of St. Paul, Minnesota; great nieces, Evelyn and Amilia Citron of Medway, and cousins, housemates and staff from Mary Lane in Oakland, Maine. A visitation for Cheryl will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026, from 3:00 – 6:00 PM at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave, Gardiner, Maine, 04345. A private family burial will be held in the Spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cheryl's memory can be made to: Special Olympics of Maine, 125 John Roberts Road, South Portland, Maine 04106.
