West Gardiner-Constance Elnora Chaney Barnard, 91, passed away peacefully in her home with family at her side, on February 4, 2025. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Robert Barnard, son-in-law David Rachocki and daughter, Tina Juarez. Survived by her daughters Susan (Al) Skiffington, Roxane Rachocki, Becky (Michael) Doherty and son-in law Jesse Juarez. Constance or Connie, for those who knew her well, was a steadfast pillar of the West Gardiner community. Her work at the Hamlin School, where she worked in the very first special education class, marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to inclusivity and the betterment of others. She played an instrumental role in launching Kennebec County's first Special Olympics, fostering an environment where athleticism and determination were celebrated in all their diverse forms. With a passion for the natural world, whether cross-country skiing, kayaking or tending her gardens led Connie to become a proud member of the West Gardiner Garden Club. Her beloved gardens served as both an expression of her creativity but a reflection of her artistic abilities with the cards she made for the club's fundraisers. A passionate genealogist, Connie dedicated years to researching her own family's roots, culminating in the publication of *The Campbells of the Northeast*, a work that chronicled her grandmother's Scottish lineage and the enduring legacy of the Campbell Clan. Her scholarly pursuit of history not only deepened her own connection to her ancestors but also shared with others the rich and enduring stories of her heritage. Proud of her heritage she was even prouder of the legacy of love, strength and compassion that she left with her daughters, twenty-two grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren and two great-great grands with another on the way.
