Whitefield- David Owen Darveau Sr. 89, passed away peacefully at his home on September 2, 2026.
Born in Augusta, Maine October 18, 1936, Dave spent 89 years making memories, building friendships, and touching the lives of everyone around him. He was a very talented mechanic who took great pride in his work and was well known for his love of racing. Whether he was working with his hands, talking about cars, or sharing his knowledge with someone who needed it, Dave was always willing to lend a hand and pass along what he knew.
Dave’s passion for racing and his accomplishments on the track earned him numerous track championships within Unity Raceway and Wiscasset Speedway from 1954 to 1996, a place in the Unity Raceway Hall of Fame in 1976, The Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2004, The New England Hall of Fame in 2008, and The Wiscasset Hall of Fame in 2020.
To his family, Dave was so much more than a mechanic and a race car driver, He was a dad, papa, hero, idol, and mentor. He will be remembered for the lessons he taught, the stories he shared, his love for racing, and the many ways he was there for the people he loved.
Dave is survived by his significant other Rita, his children Sandy, Poncho, Dana, and Darlin, nine grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, along with many other family members and loved ones who will carry his memory in their hearts.
Dave’s life was defined not only by the years he lived, but also by the people he influenced and the memories he left behind. His family and loved ones will forever cherish the time they shared with him, as well as the lessons, laughter, and love he gave them.
The Celebration of Life will be held at Crystal Falls, 1280 Eastern Ave., Chelsea, Maine on October 18, 2026, from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm Arrangements and Guidance are under the direction of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, ME
