Obituary

LEWISTON - With a spirit as bright as her smile, Delarece Ann (Moody) Gray, affectionately known as Della, Nanny, and Granny, passed away on November 21, 2024, leaving behind a legacy steeped in love, laughter, and a remarkable drive for life. Born on August 24, 1947, in Augusta, Della lived a fulfilling life marked by her witty humor, creative mind, and devotion to her loved ones. After traveling all over the country in her childhood and landing in Wayne, Maine, Della graduated from Winthrop High School in 1965. In the same year she married the love of her life, Douglas. They had 3 children and built their life in Lewiston, Maine. Della wore many hats as a loving wife, a loyal friend, electronic technician, and a much-adored matriarch and mom to many. Her knack for "fixing things" made her the go-to person for any handy job, many said she was the "jack of all trades and master of none". Her love for the ocean, cribbage, singing karaoke, dancing, playing guitar, and telling a good dirty joke brought joy to all around her. Her accomplishments of being crowned the 1964 Miss Apple Princess and becoming the first woman to coach little league baseball in Lewiston, showcased her unique spirit. She was also one of the first women to become a little league umpire. As a member of the Maine Harness Racing community, Della will be remembered for babysitting all the track kids and feeding anyone who came her way. Family was the cornerstone of Della's life. Her and her beloved husband, Douglas, enjoyed spending the week at Fryeburg Fair for over 40 years, where everyone loved to watch them dance, especially the Polka. They celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary just a day prior to her passing, marking an enduring love story that warmed the hearts of all who knew them. Della loved her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. You always made sure to answer her call. Della is survived by her husband, Douglas Gray. Her 'sis' Jeanne Sheridan. Her daughter, Laura Gray-Salley. Her son Wayne Gray and his partner, Michelle. Her son Adam Gray and his wife Stephanie. Her granddaughter Britney Salley-Gero and her husband Ryan. Her grandsons Tyler Salley and Dustin Hirtle, and her step grandchildren. Her great granddaughters Liviann & Laurali. And many more of the Moody & Gray families. Her parents, Forrest and Mary (Flagg) Moody preceded her in death. As well has her brothers Timothy and Dwight, and her beloved sister, Sharon. Della's vibrant life serves as a testament to her loving, loyal, witty, and talented nature. Her memory will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. She was, and will always be, a beacon of love and laughter in our lives. Della wanted to be celebrated with dancing and music. We will have a big celebration of life in the spring when all her family can be there. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
