Augusta – Dorothy Anna Vokes, 90, passed away on Monday, January 29.
Dorothy was born in Rockland, Maine on December 23, 1933, the daughter of Walter C. and Nellie (Golden) Wotton. She attended Rockland schools. As a child, she and her family spent their summers on Allen Island, later known for the home and creations of artist Andrew Wyeth. On January 9, 1954, she married Stanford Russell Vokes who was then serving in the US Coast Guard in Maine. They moved to Taylor, Michigan for his work as an architectural engineer with General Motors. She raised her family and worked as an outstanding and gifted floral designer. They returned to Maine in 1969 where she continued to work in the floral industry. She then worked for the State of Maine until her retirement. Upon retirement, she and Stanford delighted in frequent cruises and winters spent in sunny Florida. In recent years, she was surprised to learn, through ancestry research, that she was a direct descendent of multiple historical figures. These included Mayflower colonists John Alden and Gov. William Bradford.
Dorothy was predeceased by her husband of 55 years as well as her son-in-law, Mark Johnston, of Richmond, Maine.
She is survived by her brother, Walter B. Wotton (Patricia) of Owls Head, Maine and Summerland Key, Florida; her son Bruce (Ann) Vokes of Poughkeepsie, NY; daughter Pamela Johnston, Chelsea, Maine; grandson Eric Vokes of Poughkeepsie, NY; granddaughter Sarah Johnston (Nathan Roseberry) and grandson Chad (Samantha) Johnston of Richmond, Maine; great grandsons Mark Roseberry, Benjamin Johnston and Jeremy Johnston of Richmond, Maine.
