Dr. Irving Mayhew Obituary (1936

Gardiner --- Dr. Irving Carl Mayhew passed away on September 25 after a long illness.Born in Augusta in1936, the son of the late Dr. Irving Clyde Mayhew and Dora Mae Jameson Mayhew, brother to Phillip Mayhew of East Machias and the late James Mayhew, beloved father of Abby Elizabeth Mayhew Waddleton, grandfather of Oliver Keegan Waddleton, father-in-law to Jason John Waddleton and great friend to Mona McKay Stromberg. Carl attended Gardiner High School, Bowdoin College and Tufts Dental School and graduated in 1960. After graduation he began working within his father's dental office in Gardiner,and soon thereafterserved as a Captain in the United States Army in Korea from 1962-1964. He always spoke fondly of his time in Korea and his love of the language. In the 1970's, Dr. Mayhew was active in the Pittston Republican Committee and the Town Planning Board. He was a lobbyist for the Maine Dental Association anddedicated much time campaigning for fluoridation in Maine's drinking water, feeling strongly that every child deserved good dental health. He mentioned many times howgood he felt to see children with fewer cavities. Dr. Mayhewprovided dental care to those who needed it, at times regardless of their ability to pay.During his 45 year career as a dentist, Carlmaintained a dedication to the Rotary Club in Gardiner and enjoyed meeting weekly with his fellow Rotarians and sharing stories. For several years he cooked the breakfasts for the Club, baking biscuits and scrambling eggs. On one occasion even surprising the Rotarians with venison. In 2003 and 2004, he travelled to Romania to donate his time and dental expertise to children in orphanages. These trips gave him great joy. Throughout his life, Carl was an avid outdoorsman. On the weekends his focus shifted from dentistry to pursuits such as building a sailboat, growing trees, hunting, fishing, and working in his garden. He travelled through the Northern woods of Maine in his red Land Rover,wearing his overalls and hunting jacket which suited his personality far more than his work clothes.He adored his daughter, and was always taking her on trips through Maine and later, as she grew older, Central and South America. His family would like to thank all of those who helped him over the past few years. He greatly appreciated the kindness of so many dear friends.Carl will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his great love of learning, his will to help others and his great loyalty. There will be a service at the ChristChurch Episcopal at 2 Dresden Avenue in Gardiner, Maineon Thursday, October 2nd at 1pm.Areception will be held in the ChristChurch Parish Hall immediately following the service.
