Gerard "Jerry" R.
Gotreau
Sep 24, 1952 — Oct 31, 2026
Gardiner
GARDINER - Gerard R. Gotreau, affectionately known as Jerry, 74, of Gardiner, Maine, formerly of Randolph, passed away on Saturday, October 31, 2026, at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta. A cherished husband, devoted father and grandfather, proud veteran, and friend to many, Jerry will be remembered for his loyalty, sense of humor, enthusiasm for life, and deep love for his family and friends.
Jerry was born in Augusta, Maine, on September 24, 1952, to the late Raymond and Marie (Rita) Gotreau (Dube). He grew up on Sand Hill in Augusta, where he attended local schools and developed the strong sense of responsibility and dedication that would remain with him throughout his life.
At just 16 years old, Jerry demonstrated an early commitment to serving his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He proudly served three years on active duty, followed by 17 years in the Army Reserve, ultimately attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. Following his active-duty service, Jerry returned to his education, graduating from Gardiner High School and later earning an associate degree.
Jerry went on to build a successful career in sales within the tobacco industry, spending many years as a sales representative for U.S. Tobacco before retiring. His strong work ethic, outgoing personality, and ability to connect with people made him a valued colleague and a familiar, friendly face to those he served.
Jerry had many interests and hobbies that brought him happiness throughout the years. He enjoyed model railroading, poker, bowling, and especially spirited games of cribbage with his good friends Joel, Bob, and Jeff. A lifelong sports fan, he was a loyal supporter of the Boston Bruins and New York Giants. He also gave back to his community by serving for many years as a baseball umpire, a role that allowed him to share his love of the game with generations of players.
Jerry and his beloved wife, Sharon, shared a love of travel and adventure. Together, they enjoyed many wonderful trips and cruises, along with memorable visits to Branson, Missouri. These experiences and the memories they created together were among the many joys of his life.
Above all else, Jerry's greatest pride and happiness came from his family. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who treasured the time spent with those closest to him. His warmth, humor, generous spirit, and genuine interest in others left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be remembered not only for the life he lived, but for the love, laughter, and countless memories he leaves behind.
Jerry is survived by his devoted wife, Sharon W. Gotreau; his two children, Jeff Gotreau and his wife Trisha of Manchester and Maryann Harakall and her husband John of Chelsea; and his three beloved grandchildren, Ashlyn Harakall, Eli Gotreau, and Mason Harakall, who brought him great joy.
He was predeceased by his parents, Raymond and Marie (Rita) Gotreau.
Jerry's life was one of service, friendship, family, and love. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A private military graveside service for family will be held in the spring.
Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
