Harry Edward Smith
Chelsea-Harry Edward Smith, a devoted husband, father and grandfather, 88, died unexpectedly at Togus VA Medical Center on July 21, 2023 with his wife and daughter by his side.
He was born in Louann, AK on October 23, 1934. The son of Joe and Sammie Ross Smith.
He grew up in Arkansas then enlisted in the Army and served in Korea becoming a combat veteran. After his enlistment ended, he served in the Navy, serving a combined total of 23 years.
After his military service, he chose to live in Maine with his family and attended UMA earning an associate's degree while working at Togus VA Hospital. He then worked for the postal service as well for a combined total of twenty-six years. Upon retiring, He wintered in Alabama for 17 years.
He was a longtime member of the Central, Coastal Chapter of the Maine Trappers Association and the National Rifle Association. He was an expert marksman enjoying many hours of target practice. He was an avid hunter and trapper as well especially enjoying being outdoors with his hunting dogs, Blue, Rose and Rattler. In his later years, he added bird watching and walking Joe and Annie the family lapdogs to his hobbies.
He is survived by his wife of 41 years Nancy(Fowles) Smith: three children, James Smith, Mary Kiraly, and Ruby(Marvin) Negley: two stepchildren, Nancy Allen, Glenn Allen Jr.: eleven grandchildren, Brigitte(Caesar) Salvio, Samuel(Glison) Smith, Soffee(Travis) Webb, Angelica Allen, Melissa Kiraly, Allyson(Jake) Brown, Maxwell Negley, Moriah Negley, Miranda Negley, Mackenzie Negley, Micah Negley, Mallory Negley: Great Grandchildren, Hailey Webb, Riley Webb, and Grayson Brown: First wife R. Gail Card, Sister-in-Law Joan(Jim) Prada.
Predeceased by: Brother Gordon(Faye) Allen, Joy Marie(Charlie) Kirksey: Stepdaughter, Elizabeth Allen.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 28 at 1 p.m. Location: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Winthrop St. Augusta, ME
