Obituary

1937 - 2023 Winthrop - On September 30, 2023, we lost our mother who was a trailblazer, volunteer, artist, traveler, and friend. Jacqueline "Ann" Zack McCaslin was born in Long Island New York and when she was 13 years old moved to Gardiner Maine with her parents Elida and Kenneth Zack and her brother Robert "Bob" Zack. Upon graduation from high school, she married Henry McCaslin, and they built a wonderful home for themselves and their three children. They were married for 39 years until Henry's passing in 1995. Ann was always giving her time to others. She was a Boy Scout leader with her husband for their two sons' troop, a PTA President, a volunteer at the hospital, cancer center, and the Winthrop food pantry. Ann was a member of the Cabin Fever Quilters and participated in the State of Maine Annual Quilt Show. She used her talents to make lap quilts, anti-ouch pouches for cancer patients, and dolls for children in the hospital. Ann was also a talented painter and an avid reader. Ann loved working for Sears and Roebuck and considered those she worked with as her second family. She and her best friend Donna Michaud were the first commissioned saleswomen selling appliances. It took time before customers would trust a mom of three to know about household appliances! As her husband launched a new business it was her salary that the family lived on for several years. Ann contributed to countless charities but always preferred to keep her donations and good works anonymous. She was always there for her grandchildren, attending their school events and taking them on adventures. These adventures would take them to her beloved New York City, to the beach, the local theater, and the movies. She made birthdays, holidays, and family get-togethers special for everyone. Ann leaves sons H. Kenneth McCaslin and wife Cheri; Michael McCaslin and wife Joyce; daughter Kathi Rodrigue and husband Dale; brother Robert Zack and wife Carol; grandchildren Amber, Karen, Evan, and Erin; and great-grandchildren Henry, Charlotte, and Vincent. A Celebration of Life honoring Ann will be held on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner Maine. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website, www.staplesfuneralhome.com For those who want to honor Ann a donation can be made to the United Way, 121 Commercial Street, Augusta, Maine 04330.
