James “Jim” F. Mooney went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, following a brief illness.

He was born in Portland on April 9, 1953, to Frank C. Mooney Jr. and Elaine V. (Sullivan) Mooney.  A 1971 graduate of Waterville High School, he went on to a variety of different careers, before finding his calling professionally as a personal financial planner.

To those that knew him best, Jim was a musician and an artist at heart.  His art adorned the walls of many of his closest friends and family, and the medium that spoke to him was pen and ink.  He was also a singer and songwriter who would always have his guitar handy at many social gatherings.  He could usually be found strumming chords of his many songs that were inspired by his favorite folk singers like Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, and Harry Chapin. Jim loved to host gatherings of friends and family for food, live music, and lots of laughs, and for many years hosted Fourth of July parties at his home, and enjoyed going “all out” preparing for the party.

Jim also was a lifelong golfer and appreciated the serenity and comradery that could be found sharing a round of golf and a few cold ones with his many friends throughout the years.  Jim was also a family man, and he was very proud that he had raised two wonderful children.  He also held a special place in his heart for his former wife and the mother of his children, June A. (LeGoff) Mooney.  He will be sorely missed by the many lives that he touched, with his charming, quick smile and a spicy brand of Irish charm.

Jim is survived by his daughter Andrea Mooney (and spouse) of Augusta, his son Dylan Mooney of Augusta, sister Debbie (Mooney) Zorn of Bowdoinham, niece Sheri (Bartlett) Blackstone (and spouse) of Cundy’s Harbor, niece Shelley Zorn of Gardiner, and nephew Bob Cyr Jr.

He was reunited in peace with those who went before him, including Jim’s parents Frank & Elaine, his former wife, June, his sisters Pam (Mooney) Cyr & Sandee (Mooney) Bartlett.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. at Staples Funeral Home at 53 Brunswick Ave. in Gardiner.

Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
