WEST GARDINER - James Charles Smith, a man of undeniably unique character, has told his last story. He passed away on Thursday August 6, 2026, at the age of 75.

Born in Houlton, Maine on March 13, 1951, to Halden and Lois (Shorey) Smith, James’ life was a testament to his ingenuity, dedication, and unwavering spirit.

His formative years were spent in West Gardiner, where James (known to most as Jimmy or Jim) graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1969. He enlisted in the army, training at Fort Bragg and serving overseas in Germany. When he returned, Jim owned a sawmill in Litchfield and started a family. After moving back to the hometown he adored, Jim became a dedicated employee at Williams Oil in Gardiner, a role that showcased his strong work ethic, flexibility, and problem-solving skills. In his retirement, he returned to working with wood, owning another sawmill, and continuing to help his friends and neighbors.

Many weekends that were not devoted to wood, welding, or mechanical projects were spent on a racetrack. Racing enduro cars in his younger years at Oxford, drag racing well past others’ prime at Winterport, he built and worked on his cars and helped others with theirs.

Jim was a jack of all trades, equal parts builder and tinkerer. His mind was a repository of knowledge, particularly history, and his wit was legendary, characterized by a great dry sense of humor that both confused and delighted.

Jim cared deeply for his family and friends (who were like family). He shared a profound and loving partnership with his wife, Beth Sandra Corey-Smith. He is survived by his eight younger siblings, Kim, Barbie, Andy, Halda, Hazen, Kyle, Frank, and Vaughn; daughters Jamie, Jessica, and Elyzabeth, son Thaddius; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and nephew Ryan.

Jim’s legacy is one of a life lived with passion, intelligence, and a deep sense of self. He will be remembered for his distinctive perspective, his storytelling prowess, and the lasting impact he made on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Thursday August 13, 1-4 p.m. at The Governor Hill Mansion, 136 State St, Augusta, Maine with stories shared at 2:30.

In lieu of flowers, Jim would be honored if you donated to your local food pantry or Meals on Wheels.
