CHINA - Joseph Robert Jerrier, 75, of China, Maine, a devoted husband, loving stepfather, and cherished friend, peacefully passed away on Friday, August 14, 2026, at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center in Portland with his loved ones by his side.
He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 7, 1950, to Joseph Robert Jerrier, Sr., and Rita Jerrier (Connelly). Joe's departure leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, generosity, and humor will continue to inspire.
Joe pursued higher education, earning an associate’s degree in Fire Science that laid the foundation for his distinguished career. He lived a life filled with purpose and dedication. He honorably served his country by enlisting in the Air Force from 1971 to 1976, followed by his dedicated service in the Air Force Reserves from 1976 until his retirement as a Master Sergeant in 1997. His commitment to service extended to his career as a firefighter for the Togus VA Fire Department, where he served with distinction until his retirement in 2007.
Joe was known for his quick wit, his talent for telling long, imaginative, and highly entertaining stories, and his deeply caring nature. He had a gift for making people laugh and feel at ease, always ready with a joke or a comforting word. His kindness and giving spirit touched countless lives throughout his journey.
Beyond his professional life, Joe was an avid fisherman, often competing in tournaments with great enthusiasm. He was also a skilled competitive shooter, particularly enjoying Cooper Shots. Joe had a passion for collecting various items and found joy in assembling model cars. He was a devoted fan of television, with a particular fondness for 'Gunsmoke,' and cherished the Christmas season, especially watching Hallmark movies with his wife, Debbie.
Joe will be remembered for his funny demeanor, his caring heart, his giving nature, his unwavering kindness, and his profound love for his family and friends. His storytelling abilities captivated those around him, weaving tales that brought smiles and laughter. He was a man of many talents and passions, leaving an indelible mark on the world.
He was predeceased by his parents; Joseph R Jerrier and Rita Connolly Jerrier
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah Jerrier; Step-Son Dennis Huthins and wife Jessica of Chelsea, Maine
Siblings: Barbara Stappen and husband Robert Joyce of Hanson, Mass; Beverly Simonelli and husband John of Avon, Mass; Ronald Jerrier and wife Rose of Hanson, Mass; many nieces, nephews and cousins
His memory will be treasured by his extended family and a wide circle of friends who became like family over the years.
Joe’s visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2026, from 2-4 pm, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, A military graveside service will be held on Monday, August 24 at noontime in section G, at the NEW Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 163 Mt. Vernon Road, Augusta
