1924 - 2023
HALLOWELL - Lois Nelson Stone, wife of the late Ted Stone, died on July 16, 2023. She was born on June 25th, 1924, in Stockholm, Maine, the first of seven children born to George and Maud Nelson.
She attended Schools in Stockholm and graduated from Old Town High School in June 1942. In the fall of 1942, she entered Easter Maine General Hospital School of Nursing as an Army Cadet Nurse, graduating in September 1945.
While attending Old Town High School, she met Ted, and they were married in 1945 at the end of World War II. They lived in Lincoln, Maine for a short period before moving to South Gardiner, Maine where they lived for over 60 years and were blessed with four children, Susan, Sally, Steve, and Shelly. Lois moved to Hallowell in 2014.
She worked at the Gardiner General Hospital for over 20 years in the obstetrics and surgery departments and was always ready to help those in need of medical help in her community.
Her children were all active in music and athletics while in school and she and Ted attended many, many games, and concerts. She was an avid reader, and fan of the Boston Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots. Lois was active in the now defunct Winslow Buckmore American Legion Auxiliary.
Surviving are her children and spouses. Susan and Mahlon MacLaren of Bangor, Sally Stone of
Winthrop, Stephen and Gail Stone of Dresden, and Shelly and E. David Shaak of Eastbrook. Also, six much loved grandchildren, Katie Chadwick, Kevin MacLaren, Travis Stone, Alex Stone, Samantha Shaak, and Maggie Shaak. Eight precious and loved great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Wanda Orino of Rumford, Maine and brothers Neal and Eleanor Nelson of Rutland Massachusetts, and Dana and Sandra Nelson of Ellsworth Maine. She is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who were dearly loved.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, her husband of 59 years, Theodore Stone; a sister Edythe Niles, and her brothers, Clayton Nelson, and Hazen Nelson. Two brothers in law, Mahlon Niles, and James Orino. Two sisters-in-law, Joan Nelson, and Muriel Nelson.
Family committal services will be held on Thursday, July 20 at 1pm at the Milford Cemetery, Milford Maine.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Emmanuel Episcopal Church at 209 Eastern Ave, Augusta Maine at a date to be determined.
The family would like to thank the staff at Glenridge Nursing and Rehab in August, for the care giving.
