Obituary

Gardiner-Marilyn E. (Snowman) Rogers, 95, of Bellows Falls VT and Gardiner ME died on her 69th wedding anniversary, January 20, 2025. Born in Gardiner ME on December 19, 1929, to Arthur and Hazel (Lathrop) Snowman during a snowstorm. The doctor could not make it up the hill in South Gardiner, so all the Cannard Street neighbors came out to lower her mother down the hill in a bobsled. As a child, her doctor would call her his bobsled girl. Marilyn grew up in South Gardiner, ME and graduated from Gardiner High School in 1950. She worked in local shoe shops, Gardiner Shoe, Truitt Brothers, and Etonic Shoe in Richmond ME. She belonged to the YMCA in Augusta ME and the Four-Leaf Clover group. In 2018 she moved to Bellows Falls to be closer to her daughter. Her daughter couldn't have asked for a greater gift. They were blessed to have so much time together. She loved to sing and would come out with a song almost every day in her later years. Her daughter would join her in song and joke that they should go on tour. Neither could carry a tune, but fortunately no one had rotten tomatoes in hand. Her children grew up hearing "School Days" on the first day of school and we will miss her calling to sing Happy Birthday first thing in the morning, so we could start our day off right. We'll miss the Happy Gobble Gobble Day greeting, her quick wit, and sense of humor. On January 20, 1956, she married her cute sailor, Philip O. Rogers, in Gardiner ME. She is survived by her son, Steven Rogers of Portland ME, her baby, Barbara Rogers and favorite son-in-law Donald Benjamin of Bellows Falls VT, her favorite daughter-in-law Marguerite Rogers of Ava, MO, nine grandchildren, Derik, Vanessa, Philip, Jennifer, Michael, Thomas, Shawn, William and Christina, eleven great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter and another on the way, nieces, nephews, and her best friend from "childhood days", Marion (Moore) Thomas. Mom talked about her childhood growing up in South Gardiner and her friends that she referred to as the South Gardiner girls. One of her greatest enjoyments was being with her grandchildren. She said at the meeting of one of her great grandchildren, "My arms may not be big enough to hold all my grandchildren, but my heart is." She was predeceased by her parents, her husband who died January 2 1990, two brothers, Bernard Snowman and Elwood Snowman, two sisters Marion Snowman and Grace Snowman, a son Gordon Rogers, and a great granddaughter. A graveside service will be held in the Spring at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Augusta, ME where she will be laid to rest beside her late husband Philip. Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, ME.
