FARMINGDALE – Michael "Spike" E. Gilson, a man who embraced life with a hearty laugh and an even heartier appetite, departed this world on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta with his loved ones by his side, just a few days after celebrating his 67th birthday.

Born in Augusta on August 6, 1959, the son of Dinny and Susie (Caswell) Gilson.

Spike's spirit was as vibrant and enduring as his love for a well-cooked meal.

Spike's journey through life was marked by his unwavering enthusiasm and his commitment to the people and passions he held dear. A proud graduate of high school, he dedicated his professional life to the automotive industry, where his knack for parts and his outgoing personality made him a familiar and friendly face. For many years, he contributed his expertise at Tisdale's Auto Parts before finding a long-term home at O'Connor's for 19 years. His commitment extended to part-time work at Webb's Mobil for many years, and he was always ready to lend a hand to his family at the Randolph redemption center. His career was less about the job and more about the connections he forged along the way.

Beyond his professional life, Spike was a pillar of his community, particularly when it came to youth sports. He was instrumental in helping to start youth basketball travel teams and generously coached both youth basketball and Little League Softball for Hall-Dale. His dedication ensured that many young athletes had the opportunity to learn, grow, and most importantly, have fun. Spike was known for his infectious humor, his perpetually happy disposition, and his social nature. He loved to be surrounded by people, sharing stories and laughter. His adventurous spirit extended to his interests, where he was an avid follower of racing and all things New England sports. And, of course, he was a true foodie, always on the lookout for his next culinary delight, especially if it involved a good hotdog or a perfectly prepared Thanksgiving feast, which was his absolute favorite meal.

He was predeceased by his parents; daughter Jacqueline Morgan; Sisters Roxanne Caswell, Audrey St. Pierre and Cousin Margaret “Peggy” Dumont, Nephew William “Billy” St. Pierre.

Spike's greatest joy, however, was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Nancy Gilson; daughter Melissa Heath and husband DJ Heath; Granddaughter Adeline and grandson on the way; sister Gail Williams (Dexter Williams); many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, a large extended family and many dear friends who were like family.

He built a life filled with cherished family traditions, from the simple pleasure of a good coffee and hot dog to the warmth of family dinners and lively cookouts. His presence will be profoundly missed at every gathering.

Spike’s celebration of life will be announced by the family at a later date.
