MCLEAN, VA - Mildred Louise (Van Werry) Poehner, 88, of McLean, VA passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 11, 2024 at the Augusta Center for Health and Rehabilitation.
Mildred was born April 2, 1936 in Washington, DC, the daughter of John Glenn and Edna Alcy (Turner) Van Werry. She was raised and educated in Arlington, VA, a 1954 graduate of Washington-Lee High School. After high school, Mildred attended Watts School of Nursing in Durham, NC for a year. She then returned to Virginia to marry Robert Edward Poehner. She was married for eighteen years and together they raised their daughter, Tamara (Poehner) Kammerer. One of her proudest achievements was returning to school and earning her nursing degree at the Washington Hospital Center School of Nursing in 1971. This led to a 36 year career as an oncology nurse at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, VA, and an occupational health nurse with the United States Postal Service in Merrifield, VA.
Mildred had a love for travel and she frequently visited Hawaii, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Israel along with many other countries in Europe.
She was a person of deep faith. This faith led to many lifelong relationships and guided her throughout her joyous life.
Mildred was predeceased by her parents, John and Edna Van Werry, and her brother, John Glenn Van Werry Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Tamara Kammerer and husband Kieran of Hallowell; two grandchildren, Hannah (Kammerer) and her husband Graeme Russell of Stockholm, Sweden, and Emma Kammerer and fiancé Phillip Zackler of San Francisco; sister, Joanne Hill of McLean, VA; uncle, Reuben (Griff) Griffin of Oxon Hill, MD; three nieces, Terry Hill, Jamie Mahoney, and Jody Gouley; and two nephews, Timothy Van Werry, and Wayne Van Werry, along with many great-nieces and nephews.
The Service will be held at Money & King Funeral Home in Vienna, VA, on April 26th at 1pm with visitation at 12:30. Committal will take place at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, VA with reception following at Maggiano's Tysons Galleria.
