Obituary

PITTSTON - Norma Jean (Adams) Folckemer, 80, of Pittston, Maine passed away on March 30, 2022, at her home. She was born in Gardiner, Maine August 10, 1941, to the late Marion and Raymond Adams. She graduated from Gardiner Area High School in 1959. Norma was a beautician, a waitress at Dave's Diner in Gardiner, managed convenient stores, and video shops. She was an avid knitter and crocheted Christmas stockings for Christmas Cove and LL Bean. Norma was independent, resilient, and courageous throughout her life raising two young boys. Even her amputation in 2014, didn't stop her from enjoying the outside as she became skilled at driving her electric wheelchair around her yard determined to do what she could to get the task at hand done. Her greatest joy and pride were her grandchildren who called her "Nan." Lasting memories include camping at Lake Pemaquid, learning to swim, picking, and eating strawberries from her garden, gathering for holidays especially hunting for the numerous Easter eggs hidden around her home in the woods. Peanut butter and chocolate chip cookies were readily available to steal from the cookie jar or a whoopee pie from the refrigerator. Quiet times enjoying a perfect cup of hot cocoa or eating a bowl of chocolate mint ice cream were shared in her over-sized chair. Norma's boundless hugs were freely given and received. Norma enjoyed her extended family gatherings especially those hosted by her cousin Russell Hickey and his wife Sandra at their home on Pleasant Pond in Gardiner each Labor Day. Relatives from Massachusetts and Kentucky would gather and catch up on the latest news, laugh about times gone by and enjoy the widespread of dishes from family recipes – homemade doughnuts, baked beans, brown bread, blueberry, and apple pies. The Folckemer clan from Buffalo, New York were always welcome to take respite in Norma's home and enjoy Maine's natural beauty and fresh air. When family or neighbors stopped by, coffee was brewed, and the chatting began. Some would say Norma's strong personality limited specific topics that were better left unspoken. Norma is preceded in death by the love of her life Thomas Folckemer, infant daughter Therese and her mother and father, Marion (Brown) Adams and Raymond Evans Adams. Norma is survived by her son Jay Folckemer and spouse Anita (McKay) Folckemer of Gardiner, Brian Folckemer and spouse Valerie Moon of Surry. Grandchildren Amanda-Jo (Folckemer) Bullock and spouse Jeremy of Pittston, Melissa (Folckemer) Bacon and spouse Nathan of Hampden, Jay Paul Folckemer "Bub" and spouse Jaime of Gardiner, Samantha Folckemer, sunny Florida, Wally Moon of Surry and Thomas Folckemer of Surry, a handful of great grandchildren, a sister Shirley Dolan of Pittston, many cousins from Maine, Massachusetts and Kentucky, close friends, and neighbors. A special thank you to her neighbors and Patti (Currier) Wingo of Farmington who regularly visited and shared special moments with Norma. At Norma's request there will be no memorial service and will be interned at the Litchfield Plains Cemetery where she will lie next to her husband Tom who has waited 50 years for their reunion with their daughter Therese. Arrangements are entrusted with Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website, www.staplesfuneralhome.com
