In Loving Memory of Philip Edward Walter
Rome, ME-Philip "Phil" Walter, 76, passed away on October 31, 2023, at the Mainegeneral Rehabilitation and Long Term Care at Glenridge, in Augusta, Maine. Born in Buffalo, NY, on December 30, 1946, Phil was the son of Edward R. Walter and Phyllis A. (Hussell) Walter.
Phil's journey in education began with graduating from Bishop Timon Catholic High School, followed by Buffalo State College, where he earned his Masters in English and Education. His dedication led him to serve in the Navy during the Vietnam War, stationed on the USS Hunley in Guam. Upon completing his military service, Phil returned to his true passion—teaching. He inspired countless students in Buffalo's inner-city schools and later at Silver Creek Central Schools during his 35-year career. Known affectionately as "Mr. Walter," his love for literature, storytelling, and engaging teaching methods left a lasting impact on generations.
Phil's commitment to education extended beyond the classroom. He spent many years as a dedicated chaperone for the school ski club and volunteered as an adaptive ski instructor for Holiday Valley's Lounsbury Adaptive Ski program in Ellicottville, NY, combining his love of teaching with helping people with disabilities experience the joy of skiing.
Phil was a man of easy connections, often found in deep conversations with friends, family, and strangers. His warmth, kindness, and intellect made him approachable, and his spiritual connection with nature shone through. An artist at heart, he could turn the beauty of a vibrant flower into a stained glass masterpiece. Phil's love for the outdoors manifested in skiing and hiking in Maine with his wife, Michele, and windsurfing adventures in Cape Hatteras, NC, and the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon.
Phil's creativity knew no bounds, encompassing the artistry of stained glass and the craftsmanship of woodworking. His crowning achievement was a timber frame cottage, a labor of love where his hands, heart, and the camaraderie of family and friends converged. This cottage remains a tangible testament to Phil's unwavering dedication and skill. Beyond his artisan pursuits, Phil was a voracious reader who found solace in the simple pleasures of life, firmly convinced that a good book followed by an afternoon nap rendered existence nearly perfect.
Family meant everything to Phil. He cherished his wife, Michele, and daughters dearly, with a special place in his heart for his older sister, Margaret. Phil's generosity extended to crafting for his family, sharing his creative passions, and offering a helping hand in home-improvement projects. An avid animal lover, Phil found joy in his Border Collies, Min and Molly, and the family's chihuahua, Husky.
In the face of Alzheimer's disease, Phil's character and warmth remained intact, leaving an indelible mark on those around him. His warm smile, crinkling the corners of his hazel eyes, and his infectious laugh continued to resonate, bringing comfort to those who loved him. Phil's kindness persisted even in the memory unit, where he extended a reassuring hand and offered words of encouragement to fellow residents.
Phil was predeceased by his daughter Tess (Walter) Lewis, parents Edward and Phyllis (Hussell) Walter, and brother-in-law Robert "Bob" (Diane) MacDougall. He is survived by his loving wife, Michele MacDougall-Walter; his first-born daughter, Amanda Walter, her husband Jim Wackowski, and her stepson Jim Wackowski Jr.; his sister Margaret (Walter) Dunn, brother-in-law Raymond Dunn, niece Marie Dunn, son-in-law Cliff Lewis, and daughter Paisley. Phil leaves behind cherished Canadian relatives, including Deeta and Frank, brothers-in-law Gary MacDougall and Dale (Sheila) MacDougall, and many nieces and nephews.
To honor Phil's memory, donations can be made to the Lounsbury Adaptive Ski program at Holiday Valley Resort, PO Box 370, Ellicottville, NY 14137, or online at Lounsburyadaptive.org.
