West Gardiner
WEST GARDINER - Richard “Richie” E. Grasse, a lifelong resident of West Gardiner, Maine, gracefully completed his earthly journey on Monday, October 26, 2026, at the Togus Spring Hospice Unit, at age of 71, after a long battle with cancer.
Born in Gardiner, Maine, on October 4, 1955, to his late parents Elihu Norman Grasse, Sr. and Barbara Doreen Grasse (Day), Richard grew up with a strong sense of community and dedication that would define his entire life. He was a man of quiet strength, steady hands, and a warm heart, leaving a lasting impression on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Professionally, Richard was a familiar and dependable presence in his hometown. He dedicated 28 years of his life to Hannaford in Gardiner, working diligently as a night crew stocker. His unwavering work ethic, reliability, and commitment to his daily responsibilities earned him the deep respect of his colleagues and supervisors alike. Day in and day out, Richard approached his work with quiet pride, embodying the values of perseverance and dedication.
Away from work, Richard possessed a vibrant zest for life and found immense joy in friendly competition and outdoor camaraderie. He was an avid participant in many sports and recreational activities. Whether he was aiming for a strike on the bowling lanes, throwing darts with precision, lining up a shot at the pool table, pitching horseshoes in the warm afternoon sun, or enjoying a peaceful round of golf, Richard embraced every moment with enthusiasm. These hobbies were not merely pastimes for Richard; they were cherished opportunities to build enduring friendships and share laughter with those he held dear.
Richard is survived by two brothers, Robert Grasse and Elihu N. Grasses, Jr, and wife Gail; and many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his beloved parents, and infant brother Raymond Grasse.
Though he has departed from this world, the memory of his gentle spirit, his steadfast loyalty, and his zest for life will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
