AUGUSTA – Robert E. Chaput, Sr., 86, of Augusta, Maine, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Born in Gardiner, Maine, on May 25, 1940, Robert was the son of Armand and Ardean (Curtis) Chaput.
Robert spent several years as a manager at Mr. Market and then a Buyer at Pine State. He also spent 25 years in The National Guard. Throughout his life, he found happiness in the simple things that meant the most to him: family, friends, the outdoors, and the activities he loved.
An avid harness racing enthusiast, Robert enjoyed following the races and sharing in the excitement of the sport. Later in life he even bought himself a racehorse ”Forward Bliss” and won a race with him at the Oxford Fair. He also loved fishing whether it was in the boat or on the ice, spending time outdoors, and cheering on his beloved Boston Red Sox. Sports were always a favorite, and he enjoyed following his teams and the games.
One of Robert’s favorite places was his family camp on Burnt Jacket Mountain on Moosehead Lake. It was a special place where he and his family spent countless hours making memories, looking for moose, fishing, boat rides, playing cribbage, and simply being together.
Above all, Robert cherished his family. Whether enjoying time at camp, watching a game, holidays, or sharing everyday moments, it was the time spent together that mattered most.
Robert was predeceased by his parents, Armand and Ardean; his beloved wife, Mildred; his sister, Carol Moulton; and his grandson, Nathan Couture.
He is survived by his four children: Robert Chaput Jr. and his wife Lori, Roberta Couture and her husband Michael, Ricky Chaput and his wife Stacey, Rebecca Chaput and her partner Ariel Savage.
He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 5, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Litchfield Plains Cemetery, Plains Road, Litchfield, Maine.
Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.
