Robert Leonard 'Larry' Lane, 88 of Windsor passed away on Wednesday Jan 19 at the ManeGeneral Medical in Augusta. He was born in Keene, N.H. on April 22, 1922 a son of Ralph Lane and Bertha Jebb Lane.Larry graduated from Waltham High School in Waltham, MA. While in high school, he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp. in 1942 and served honorably with the 551st Bombardment Squadron, 385th Bombardment Group H stationed in England. As a ball turret gunner on B17 Bombers, he flew missions over Berlin, Northern France, Rhineland, Normandy and Ardennes. Additional attacks included aircraft factories in Warnemuende, Brunswick, and Ragensburg, submarine pens and docks in Wilhelmshaven and Kiel as well as several other Central Europe pre-invasion targets. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for 'Heroism or Extraordinary Achievement while Participating in Aerial Flight' and the Combat Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters.Larry was an avid sports fan and enjoyed following the Red Sox and Patriots. He enjoyed fishing and was known to place a few bets on the 'ponies' during the Union and Windsor Fairs.He was a member of the American Legion Post 2 in Augusta and the VFW Post 779 in Keene, N.H. He was employed by the former Carleton Woolen Mills in Winthrop for many years retiring in 1987.Larry was predeceased by his three brothers Henry, Wesley and Raymond and Sisters Dorothy Tripp and Florence Shaw.He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn Cole Lane of Windsor, five sons, Norman of Falmouth, MA., Roy and his wife Meg of Belgrade Lakes, Andrew and his wife Judy of Gilbertsville, PA., Kevin and his wife Diane of West Gardiner, Robert Jr. and his wife Beth of Chelsea, three daughters, Linda Veilleux and her husband Gary of Augusta, Kim Belanger and her husband Tom of Belgrade, Elizabeth Cumber and her husband Jay of Fayette, 19 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.There will be no visiting hours. His funeral service, with Full Military Honors, will be held at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery Chapel on Mt. Vernon Road in Augusta on Monday, Jan., 24th at noon.Arrangements are under the care of Staples Funeral Home 53 Brunswick Ave. Gardiner
