1958 - 2022 PITTSTON - Robert Laverne Matthews, 63, of Pittston Maine, died Friday, May 13th, 2022 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta, after a brief illness. He was born in Norfolk, VA, on December 2, 1958, the son of Albert and Bernetia (Copes) Matthews. After high school Robert worked with his best friend Mike Tart and his dad Shorty Tart doing commercial fishing, and he also worked as a pipe welder at Newport News Shipyard. In 1980 he enlisted in the United States Army and severed three years. Robert loved the outdoors, being on the water, running his dog Oakley in the fields, and really enjoyed watching movies, collecting DVD's, shopping at Best Buy, and electronics. He had a wonderful sense of humor. He was predeceased by his parents, and a brother Roger Matthews. Robert is survived by his wife Sally (Hall) Matthews, of Pittston; a sister Brenda White and Husband Richard, of Virginia; a brother Dean Matthews, and a cousin Dora Ellsworth and husband Wayne, of Virginia. Visiting hours will be celebrated on Monday, May 23rd from 4-6 pm, at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner. A private military burial will be held at a later date.
