Yarmouth- Scott R. Sawtelle, passed unexpectedly on November 6, 2025 in Gardiner, Maine as the result of a motor vehicle collision. A really good human taken far too soon. A kind, quick-witted man with a heart as big as the Maine sky. Scott had a gift for helping others and making people laugh. He touched so many lives with his steadfast helpful and caring demeanor.
Scott was the devoted husband of Jacqueline "Jackie" Sawtelle (O'Connell). For 36 wonderful years they were a great partnership. The kind of couple often seen holding hands on evening walks or spotted with binoculars on a birding adventure along the coast. They met and married within a few months and never looked back, proof that when you know, you know.
He was so proud of his son Ben (and Brittany, his partner). They shared many hobbies including birding, record collecting and woodworking. From their days in the Cub Scouts right through life, they've been the best of friends.
Scott brought his cornball sense of humor and dad jokes into every conversation. His laughter was contagious and will be greatly missed.
Scott was the loving son of the late Bob and Betty Sawtelle of Westbrook, with whom he shared a love of art, poetry, and photography. In their later years, he was a constant presence, showing up every morning for coffee with them before heading to work.
He loved to show off the watercolor work done by his dad and his own catalogue of beautiful bird photos.
His grateful neighbors knew that they could always call upon Scott to help with anything around the house. Star gazing and telling jokes at the fire pit kept the neighborhood together through thick and thin. He loved to putter in the yard and make sure that the birds were always fed.
He leaves behind siblings David (Cathy), Kenny (Debbie) and Janis (Bobby) and many nieces and nephews that will miss the way that he made them each feel so special.
He also leaves his mother-in-law, Sylvia, with whom he shared a special bond. She loved his visits and took pride in the family that he and Jackie built.
The O'Connell crew - Mary (M-A), the late Judy (Tim), Beth, Janet (Dan), and Rob (Tina) adored their brother-in-law and will miss his warmth, humor and gentle teasing.
He was proud of his career with the State of Maine Natural Resource Agencies that spanned nearly four decades. If you asked him what he did for work, his response was, "All of the things that nobody else wants to do."
Though his chair by the fire pit will be empty, his laughter, kindness, and corny jokes will echo in the hearts of everyone lucky enough to have known him. The world's a little quieter without him — but also infinitely brighter for having had him in it.
Fly high with the birds, Scott!
